Welcome to Spring and thank you to everyone for your continuing efforts toward a fair contract for our OPS members. Plan a road trip to Belleville on Friday May 1st to show Premier Wynne that she must return to the bargaining table!! A huge turnout is expected and your support is needed. Members are asked to arrive by 8:00 a.m. and stay for as long as they can, likely a couple hours total. The local will pay mileage to those that carpool with their colleagues. Talk to your steward to advise of your participation. Bring your picket signs, noise makers and OPSEU swag!
Recent activities in the Region included regional elections for our Executive Board Members. Welcome to Smokey Thomas, Gareth Jones and Chrisy Tremblay to the Executive Board roles as Region 4 representatives. Thank you to David Lundy and Barb DeRoche for your commitment to the region as your current executive board roles come to an end in May.
OPSEU annual convention will take place in Toronto from May 7th to 9th and is a learning opportunity for members to see all the activities of our union in action. Local 432 will have 4 representatives in attendance and a report will be provided to members at the May 13th LEC. The mail out for the BPS conference should be received soon, with that event scheduled for June 5th to 7th in Toronto.
As a union we are in a very difficult position these days and our commitment must remain strong to ensure we are showing our unity and solidarity during what is developing into a very difficult bargaining process. Our employer does not appear to be interested in bargaining and therefore we have moved forward with our Strike/Lock Out plans. A strike committee has been established with members from across our Local and a strike headquarters has been established in Kingston at 1085 Princess Street.
If you haven't completed the NEW Form B, ensure the form is submitted to a steward as soon as possible. If you are interested in an alternate picket location or an accommodation during a strike, please complete the form and submit it to a steward as soon as possible. NO cheques will be issued for strike pay should we have a labour disruption and the forms must be submitted prior to any interruption of work. Local 432 LEC hope to have all of the revised forms submitted by May 30th. Contact a steward if you need information or assistance with completion.
The challenge to ALL of us is to ensure that our colleagues, our families and our communities understand that WE are battling to keep public services public, fight against the excessive costs that we know privatization of services will cost all of us and protect our future!
